Experience an up close and hands on workshop on Himalayan siddha breathing techniques to learn correct ujjāyī breathing utilizing the myofascial psoas\, a deep-seated band of muscle that connects the diaphragm\, spine and pelvis (as shown in the photo illustration). \nPractice prāṇāyāma by activating the psoas that allows for a three-dimensional cylindrical breathing. The breath can then be controlled by breathing from the core\, and prolonged using the ujjāyī method of prāṇāyāma. This thoraco-pelvic breathing allows one to feel the breath down to the pelvic floor. The diaphragm is properly utilized thereby releasing tension from the sternum. This foundational breathwork is needed to fulfil the intended goal of guiding prāṇa in spinal breathing techniques. \nA practitioner of this prāṇāyāma technique takes a stepwise approach: (1) Activating the psoas during breathing\, (2) Feeling the breath down to the pelvis\, (3) Controlling the thoraco-pelvic breath from the core (five fingers below the belly-button)\, (4) making the breath deeper and prolonged by using the ujjāyī method\, (5) Guiding the prāṇa upward along the centre of the spinal tube during inhalation\, (6) Guiding the prāṇa downward along the back of the spinal tube during exhalation\, and (7) integrating the parts for an experience of breath felt in the pelvis while the current of prāṇa moves in the spinal tube. Calmness is experienced during the breaths and during the pauses in between. \nThe gentle guided movement of the spine and the sternum brings about emotional release. Practice of this correct breathwork is highly conducive for meditation\, vitality and wellness. A selection of the topics and techniques that will be covered includes: \n– Correct ujjāyī breathing from the core\n– Thoraco-pelvic psoas breathing\n– 3D cylindrical deep breathing\n– Breathing down to the pelvic floor\n– Guiding prāṇa along the spinal tube\n– Breathing synchronized with Oṃ chant \nHis Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda is a yogi-monk who reveals to us rare prāṇāyāma and meditation techniques from the Himalayan siddha tradition. See how mantra chanting falls in place upon understanding the basics of syllables. All 16 vowels\, 33 consonants and 3 composite sounds will be taught. A recording link for self-guided practice will be provided to each participant along with a pronunciation guide on how to relate with the sound partitions of Sanskrit language. \nThis is a unique way to learning mantras and peace chants using auditory techniques (śruti). Experience\, memorize and practice a collection of mantras as per the Himalayan system of chanting that emphasizes pronouncing sound constructs by intently listening to the sound partitions\, orating them synchronized with breathing\, and correct application of timing. \nThe Workshop focuses on the basics of Sanskrit mantra chanting directly taught by His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda in two sessions. Experience how the sublime recitation of juxtaposed sound syllables produces an actual physical vibration\, which awakens a spiritual energy and thus brings about a distinct state of awareness. This is a rare opportunity to learn from the very best authentic source and tradition\, as His Holiness is renowned for his chanting expertise. \nThe first day of the workshop will introduce the foundational 52 sounds of Sanskrit. Participants will learn the correct pronunciation of each sound as well as philosophical meanings of certain sounds as they relate to soli-lunar rhythms\, the digits of the spine and other parts of the body. This overall understanding of the deeper relationship between sound\, the universe and the body will lay the foundation. Simple chants will be taught and practiced. \nOn day two\, participants will learn peace chants plus other Vedic and Tantric mantra using the correct cadence and voice tonality. Synchronizing the mantras with breathing rhythm as well as their breathless chant versions will be practised. Time permitting\, other auspicious invocations will also be taught using the same foundational techniques. \nKnowledge of Sanskrit letters or language is not a prerequisite. Intent listening and ability to repeat sounds will aid in memorizing. This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those already fluent with mantra chanting. \nWorkshop includes a light Ayurvedic snack on Saturday and a gluten-free mostly-vegan light Ayurvedic lunch on Sunday\, both served after the class sessions. While Venus (the ruling Lord of planet Venus) is hailed to be the son of sage Bhrigu\, Lord Parashurāma also took birth in the familial lineage of sage Bhrigu. In essence the day is a divine remembrance of sage Bhrigu who is hailed in the Sanskrit lore as the one with sārupya-moxa or the great seer (rishi) who can imitate and look like the compassionate overlord of our solar system! Join us for a Himalayan Chanting Workshop to learn the basics of Sanskrit mantra chanting using auditory techniques (śruti) directly taught by His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda. This is a rare opportunity to learn from the very best authentic source and tradition\, as His Holiness is renowned for his chanting expertise. \nExperience and practice mantras as per the Himalayan system of chanting that emphasizes pronouncing sound constructs by intently listening to the sound partitions\, orating them synchronized with breathing\, and correct application of timing. Knowledge of Sanskrit letters or language is not a prerequisite. Attentive hearing and ability to repeat sounds will aid in memorizing. \nParticipants will learn both Vedic and Tantric mantra on lamp lighting and lamp extinguishing\, using the correct cadence and voice tonality\, as an appeasement to fire. Synchronizing the mantras with breathing rhythm as well as their breathless chant versions will be taught. The class will include practicing and orating a Sanskrit peace chant at various levels of difficulty. Other auspicious invocations to remove obstacles will also be taught using the same foundational techniques. \nAn Ayurvedic snack will be served following the chanting practice at the end of the workshop. This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those already fluent with mantra chanting. \n Program Schedule\n4:00 pm – Check in\n8:30 pm – Ayurvedic snack\n9:00 pm – Close of fellowship\nThere will be a short break during the middle of the class \nNote: There is limited seating in the fellowship room\, and a full house is expected. \nTravel & Flights\nFor those coming from out of town\, we recommend flying into either LAX or SBA.
